Dr Martyn J. Davies
Dr Martyn J. Davies is the Executive Director of the Centre for Chinese Studies at Stellenbosch University and is a part-time faculty member at the University of Stellenbosch Business School. Martyn is a Senior Lecturer at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), University of Pretoria where he is Director of the Asia Business Centre.
He holds a BA degree in Law, an Honours Degree in International Relations (cum laude), a Master's Degree in International Relations (cum laude) (University of the Witwatersrand), a Diploma in Asian Studies (Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea), and a PhD in International Relations (University of the Witwatersrand) - completed at the age of twenty five. He also has a certificate from Harvard Business School for its “Making Markets Work” course.

Tracy Hon
Tracy Hon is Projects Director at the Centre for Chinese Studies. Prior to joining the Centre, Tracy was employed by several blue chip corporate companies in roles of executive and general management, consulting and business analysis. She embarked on an extensive research project and based on her findings, she established a successful Chinese Educational and Cultural Exchange Program between China and South Africa. The business won the Entrepreneurship Award from Liberty Life in 2004 and was later nominated for Entrepreneur of the Year by the University of Cape Town / Cape Argus. She has been a guest entrepreneur for UCT’s MBA group at the Department of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
She holds a MBA degree from Bond University, Australia, a BComm degree in Finance and ICT from Witwatersrand University, South Africa and a BMed degree in Biochemistry.
She is fluent in English and conversant in Afrikaans and Cantonese.

Carla Paiva
Carla Paiva is Projects Manager at the Centre for Chinese Studies. Carla holds an MA in International Relations (University of the Witwatersrand) and is the holder of numerous scholarships and academic awards for academic achievement.
Carla was involved in the United Nations Peace Keeping Mission in Mozambique as project manager and advisor to Senior Director for the Reintegration of Demobilised Soldiers, during that country's transition to peace in 1994-1995. She has also worked on numerous sustainable development projects in Soweto and Alexandra in South Africa for a UK-based market research company. Carla has recently resided in Portugal and worked as a journalist for a regional newspaper.

Hannah Edinger (Johannesburg Office)
Hannah Edinger is Economist at the Centre for Chinese Studies. She has been involved in a number of research projects for the Centre for Chinese Studies (CCS) with focus on foreign aid, trade and investment. Recently, she formed part of the research team that investigated how China delivers development assistance to Africa, a research undertaking completed in February 2008 for DFID-China. She regularly prepares briefings for the Centre’s Private Sector Research Unit and has also been editor of the monthly China Monitor, the Centre’s flagship publication since 2006.
Hannah obtained a BComm d e gree, majoring in Economics and Statistics, a BComm Honours degree in Economics (cum laude), and MComm in Economics (cum laude) from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. In her Master’s dissertation Hannah focused on the growing global imbalances and the net deflationary bias in the international financial system with specific focus on the United States and China.
While completing her Master’s degree Hannah held a researcher position at the CCS. Hannah has also worked as a lecturer assistant at the Department of Economics and Statistics at the University of Stellenbosch and was involved in the Economics Department's Tutoring programme and Summer School programme.
Hannah is fluent in German, English and Afrikaans and studying Mandarin.

Hayley Herman
Hayley Herman is Research Manager at the Centre for Chinese Studies. Having obtained a Bachelors Degree and an Honours Degree in International Studies, she joined the Centre as a Research Assistant while studying towards her Masters Degree in International Studies at Stellenbosch University.
A recipient of a Linnaeus Palme Scholarship, she spent a semester of her Honours year at Södertörns Högskola in Stockholm, Sweden. During this time she successfully completed the United Nations Staff Officers Course through SWEDINT. She also completed an internship at the the WFUNA office at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland in 2007 where she attended the 5th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, ECOSOC High Level and Substantive sessions and co-presented a workshop on the Millennium Development Goals at the Civil Society Development Forum 2007. Hayley was a founding member of the United Nations Association of South Africa (UNA-SA) and Committee member of the UNA Chapter at Stellenbosch University and has participated in Model United Nations in South Africa and Sweden.

Johanna Jansson
Johanna Jansson is a Senior Analyst at the Centre for Chinese Studies where she has been active in a number of projects researching Sino-African relations. In her capacity at the CCS, Johanna has carried out field research in China, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon and Uganda. Johanna completed an academic exchange program in November 2008 as a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for West Asian and African Studies (IWAAS) within the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in Beijing.
Johanna holds a Master's Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from Umeå University, Sweden, an Honours degree (cum laude) in Political Science from Stellenbosch University and a Bachelor Degree in Political Science from Lund University, Sweden. Prior to joining the Centre in 2007, Johanna worked for the Swedish Migration Board, the Swedish Correctional Services and for the Swedish Union of Civil Servants (ST). As a freelance writer, Johanna has since 2004 published chronicles on South African and Swedish current affairs for Swedish magazines and travel sites. She freelanced during 2006 and 2007 as a reporter for the Swedish Television (SVT) and has spent time working in sales in Paris.
Johanna is a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society for Academic Excellence, is fluent in French, English and Swedish and conversant in IsiXhosa.

Carine Kiala 
Carine Kiala is a Senior Analyst at the Centre for Chinese Studies, Stellenbosch University. She obtained a Bachelors Degree and an Honours Degree in International Relations from the University of Pretoria (UP), where she is currently studying towards a Masters Degree in International Relations. Carine was Junior Lecturer in the UP Department of Political Sciences and was involved in the department’s Events Committee. She was a founding member of the Pretoria Chapter of United Nations Association of South Africa (UNA-SA) and launched the Model United Nations programme at the University of Pretoria.
Prior to joining the Centre, Carine worked for a consulting firm Emerging Market Focus, while pursuing her studies. As a Business Analyst, she conducted field research into several African countries on political, economic, social, cultural and trade matters for private companies, financial institutions and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Carine was also the Coordinator of the African-Asian Society (AAS), a non-for-profit organisation that facilitates dialogue and networking for African and Asian diplomats and businesses. Carine is fluent in English and French and conversant in Portuguese.

Tebogo Lefifi
Tebogo Lefifi is the China Representative of the Centre for Chinese Studies. She holds a BComm degree, with a focus in Business Economics and Economics from University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. She has also obtained a post graduate diploma in Financial Management and Investments from the University of South Africa, and completed a programme on Finance and an International Relations course at the London School of Economics.
Tebogo is currently studying towards a Masters in Business Leadership (MBL) with the UNISA School of Business leadership. She is also studying Mandarin at Beijing University of Chemical Technology in Beijing. She has been awarded a Chinese Government Scholarship to continue her post graduate studies in International Business.
Prior to joining the CCS, Tebogo worked for KRYTERION in London as international business research consultant and previously was the Director for Young Business South Africa (YBSA). She currently serves on the board of South African China Business Association (SACBA) in Beijing.

Elizabeth Newman
Elizabeth is the office administrator at the Centre for Chinese Studies. Before joining the CCS in 2007, Elizabeth was working part time as office administrator for the Department of Ancient Studies at Stellenbosch University. At the same time she held a full time position at Memorphic, a website company based in Stellenbosch.
Elizabeth holds a BA degree in Linguistics from the University of the Western Cape (UWC). She has also previously worked as a teacher at various schools in the Western Cape.

Jacobie Müller (Johannesburg Office)
Jacobie Müller is responsible for Content and Product Design at the Johannesburg office of the Centre for Chinese Studies. Having completed her BA in Socio-Informatics at the University of Stellenbosch, she went on to do her honours in Brand Management and Leadership, and Brand Communications and Leadership, at the Vega Brand Communication School based in Cape Town.
She has worked in the field of graphic design and brand strategy, both in South Africa and the United States. This has included stints with Code - Company of Designers (Brand Assistant) in Cape Town and M.E. Media LLC in Florida, developing brand strategy and engaging in design work.
Jacobie is fluent in English, Afrikaans and conversant in German.

Matthew McDonald 
Matthew McDonald is an analyst at the Centre for Chinese Studies. He received his Bachelors degree in International Studies (cum laude) from Stellenbosch University in 2006 and his Honours degree in Political Science (cum laude) from the same institution in 2007.
During his Honours year he received a Linnaeus Palme Scholarship, and spent a semester at Södertörns Högskola in Stockholm, Sweden. In 2008he studied towards a second Honours degree in English Studies. Matthew plans to complete his Masters in International Studies at Stellenbosch University in 2009.

Herman Wiid 
Herman Wiid is an analyst at the Centre for Chinese Studies. He received his Bachelors degree in Socio-Informatics (cum laude) from Stellenbosch University in 2008 and is currently studying towards his Honours degree in Socio-Informatics at the same institution. Herman is also involved with freelance work for Die Matie student newspaper, Litnet, Die Volksblad, Red - the green magazine and is an HIV/Aids lay counselor. He plans to study Journalism in 2010. Herman is fluent in Afrikaans and English, conversant in German, and studying Mandarin and IsiXhosa.

Anneke Kamphuis 
Anneke Kamphuis is an analyst at the Centre for Chinese Studies. She obtained a Bachelors Degree in American Studies in 2005 and a Bachelors Degree in International Relations and International Organizations in 2007, both from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. She is currently studying towards a Masters Degree in International Studies at Stellenbosch University, which she plans to finish in 2009.
Prior to coming to South Africa, Anneke served as the Chairperson for the Student Organization of Groningen and the Secretary of the Central Executive Board for the Student Organizations (CUOS). Furthermore, Anneke interned as a strategic political analyst with the Dutch Ministry of Defense. Anneke is fluent in Dutch, English, Afrikaans and conversant in German and French.

CCS - Annual Report 2007
Since its formation in 2004, the Centre
for Chinese Studies, the first institution dedicated to the study of China-Africa relations on the African continent, has completed a number of groundbreaking studies on China’s relationship with the continent.
During the course of 2007, the CCS has continued to find new and innovative areas of research, exploring various aspects of China’s engagement with Africa. This research has resulted
in studies related to trade, investment,
aid, agriculture and infrastructure.
The CCS Annual Report provides an overview of the CCS activities and
research outputs in 2007.
